It's August again and we know life is getting really busy with school and the art festivals just around the corner. We hope the high fuel prices keep coming down like they have in the past couple weeks. We're here to help do our part to keep your budgets strong, by keeping all of our glazes at least 20% off list along with almost every tool and piece of equipment we stock at least 20% off everyday.
Check out our NEW Class Website at www.aPotteryStudio.com We're also working hard to continue bringing in quality workshops such as Marline Walker, from Texas, for PMC (precious metal clay) and Glass Fusing workshops Aug 16 & 17. These workshops are limited in size and we expect them to fill quickly. Also, don't forget our special Topical Classes David and Kelley teach most Saturdays (usually 10-1 so you still have your day). We now have AC in the studio for your comfort!!!
Don't forget - Empty Bowls - is just around the corner and if you need clay for your 10-20 bowls, just ask Kelley.

Super Dave's Tip of the Month
Sticky Buns!
Those of you who I have had the honor of meeting may have thought that donuts and sticky buns may have been my favorite for overindulgence. Thanks for the sweet thoughts. So, let me tell you the inside story about sticky buns.
Once upon a time a gentleman from BellaVista helped me in my shop doing the ordinary odds and ends that every pot shop seems to have. Leonard referred to himself as the bun man. "I'll do anything that needs to be done to the ass, or I mean bottom, of the pots". He became very proficient at cleaning up and waxing bottoms of pieces.
So, Super Dave, what does this have to do with sticky buns? Yes back on track and to the tip. But first two questions for you my faithful reader. Have you ever had a plate or platter warp in the glaze firing for no apparent reason? Have you ever fired a lid on a piece to help prevent warping only to have the lid become very hard to get back off? The answers to both questions may be sticky buns!
The plate coming back through quartz conversion, where lots of shrinkage occurs, may get hung-up temporarily on the shelf causing it to warp or crack. The lid becoming vitreous at temp almost creates a bond with its bottom.
I have found that adding alumina hydrate to my wax resist in both situations. The alumina acts as little ball bearings, letting the plate slide effortlessly across the shelf and as a buffer between the lid and its base. It cleans up after the firing with just a little rub from a piece of sandpaper. The result is no more sticky buns for Super Dave.
